GAINESVILLE - The Northeast Georgia History Center is celebrating Veterans Day with a week-long exhibit at the museum off Academy Street, beginning with a special Veterans Day family day on Sunday.

According to Julie Carson, Education and Volunteer Coordinator for the History Cecenter, a range of activities will be offered and are suitable for all ages, including veteran volunteers who will share their stories.

"About a dozen and a half veterans have said they will be here to visit with guests or answer questions about things from their particular time in the service," said Carson.

Riverside Military Academy will present the colors at 1:15 p.m., followed by the playing of the National Anthem. Veterans and other military members will be recognized at 2:30. Afterward, patriotic music from the 40's and 50's will be performed and veterans are encouraged to get up and dance like it was yesteryear.

Hands-on activities include a gear try-on, allowing younger visitors to don uniforms.

"There will be hands-on activities, like crafts, as well as the opportunity for students to try on clothes and uniforms or try to carry a backpack loaded with gear that a solider might have to carry," said Carson.

"In addition, we have a lot of exhibits. We'll bring things from our archives out that are not normally on display for the Veteran's Week activities," said Carson. "We put things out that have significance for all of the military conflicts from the 20th century through the early 21st century...we'll have something from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and Iraq/Afghanistan."

Admission is free for all during Family Day Sunday, and is free all week for veterans, active and reserve military members.
