Jason Carter to announce bid for governor's office

ATLANTA - The grandson of former President Jimmy Carter told the Atlanta Journal Constitution he plans to challenge Governor Nathan Deal in next year's election.

Democrat Jason Carter currently represents District 42 in Dekalb County. Carter, an attorney, was elected to the Georgia Senate in 2010.

According to his biography on the Georgia Senate web site, Carter served as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Lochiel, South Africa prior to beginning his practice as an attorney. He has authored a book about South Africa, and he
has published articles on legal issues and other topics.

Carter is expected to publicly announce his candidacy Thursday at a press conference.
