WINDER - Winder Mayor David Maynard has released a statement about the suspension of the city's police chief and two other staff members in the department, saying he made the move when he was told of testing irregularities in the department.

"I take these allegations very seriously and have instructed the City Attorney to procure the services of David Archer to conduct an investigation," said Maynard in the statement.

"During this investigation I have placed Chief Dennis Dorsey, Major Jim Fullington and Lieutenant Frank Farr on administrative leave with pay. Lieutenant Rob Curott is acting as Chief for the time being."

Maynard again emphasized the allegations are not criminal in nature.

Winder Administrator Donald Toms told the Athens Banner-Herald that allegations were made by someone in the department. According to the published report, Toms said the allegations have nothing to do with criminal activity, sex, drugs or money.

An e-mail accompanying the statement said that Maynard would have no further comment on the issue until the completion of the investigation.
