According to Trooper 1st Class Aaron Church of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa, 70-year-old Charles Jones' 1989 Ford Ranger was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Georgia 15 (U.S. Highway 441) at the time of the wreck.
The pickup struck a 2006 Toyota 4Runner driven by 56-year-old Daniel Williams of Marietta head-on, with impact continuing along the driver's side of the vehicles, Church said.
As the Toyota SUV spun out of control, it was struck by a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 40-year-old Gabriel Mayberry of Commerce, which was traveling south on Georgia 15 in the right lane, Church said.
The collisions occurred just south of Nunnally Road, Church said.
After impact, the Ford pickup traveled onto Nunnally Road and stopped. Jones, who was unrestrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck had no airbags, Church said.
Williams was taken by ambulance to Habersham Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. He was expected to be released overnight.
Mayberry and his passenger, 39-year-old Connie Mayberry of Commerce, complained of injuries, but neither was taken for treatment.
"I'm saying alcohol was a factor - suspicion of it anyway," Church said of the crash.
All lanes of Georgia 15 reopened at 11:25 p.m.
The Georgia 15 crash was the second fatal wreck in Habersham County Sunday night, with the first happening at 7:22 p.m. near Demorest.
