GAINESVILLE - As Trick-or-treaters hit the streets Thursday night, many people on the sex offender registry will be elsewhere.

According to Gainesville Police Corporal Kevin Holbrook, Georgia Department of Corrections probation/parole officers are proactive on Halloween.

"They will have these sex offenders report for a number of hours on Halloween, so they are not at their residences while kids are trick-or-treating," Holbrook said.

Regardless of where the offenders are during the annual tradition, Holbrook said there are a couple things parents can do to play it safe.

He said you should always accompany your children to the door when Trick-or-treating, regardless of the child's age.

Holbrook also said you can check the Georgia Bureau of Investigation website.

"They (parents) can look up those that have been incarcerated/arrested for sex offenses," Holbrook said.
