The Georgia Department of Transportation says getting rid of the fees could add 11,000 vehicles to the road per day.
Some drivers avoid the road because of the 50-cent toll and traffic backups.
Crews began work to demolish the toll plaza this weekend. In all, the four-phase project is expected to take about a year as workers also remove signs and restripe the highway.
The governor's office announced an end to the toll last year. The charge is scheduled to end the week before Thanksgiving.
