GAINESVILLE - Work should start Monday on the bridge at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center on Clarks Bridge Road in Hall County.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said in a press statement that commuters on State Route 284 - better known as Clarks Bridge Road - will start seeing work zone signs on Monday. Equipment and materials should also arrive at the work site Monday. Then, by the first week of November work crews will be in the water getting ready to drill for the new concrete support structures for the bridge.

The new bridge will have 12-foot wide lanes and an 8-foot wide bike-able shoulder in each direction, according to the DOT. In addition to the bridge, the $8.7 million dollar project includes a new pedestrian tunnel under the roadway.

The existing bridge was built in 1958 and does not meet current design standards.

Projected finish date is December 31, 2015.
