FLOWERY BRANCH - Hall County authorities said Friday morning that human remains have been discovered at Chestnut Ridge Park in south Hall County.

Sheriff's investigators said the body was discovered Thursday afternoon by a crew that had been contracted to clean up in the park. The remains were wrapped in a blanket inside one of the bathrooms.

"The state of decomposition was advanced, bordering on skeletal remains, so that there was truly no way upon first inspection to tell if the victim was male or female or about how old, " said Sheriff's Lt. Stephen Wilbanks.

The body has been transported to the Dekalb County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy, according to Wilbanks.

Chestnut Ridge Park is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property that was closed to the public several years ago. It is currently under long-term lease by Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, but has remained closed. Wilbanks said it was the understanding of the Sheriff's Office that the park was being cleaned in anticipation of it being opened for use next year.
