Man jailed for string of Forsyth County burglaries

CUMMING - A Gwinnett County man remained in the Forsyth County Jail Wednesday afternoon following his Monday evening arrest in a string of burglaries.

Sheriff's Deputy Doug Rainwater said Jason Farris, 29, allegedly targeted convenience stores and gas stations. During the break-ins, Farris went after petty cash.

"In one case, he removed and stole some lottery tickets and cashed those lottery tickets out before the business opened up and saw that the tickets were stolen," Rainwater said.

Stolen tickets can be cancelled before they're redeemed, according to Rainwater.

It was video of Farris cashing in the tickets that ultimately led to his arrest. Rainwater said investigators circulated the photo and began getting names. Many of the tipsters gave them the same name.

"We found out that he was living pretty much in hotels for the week, and after about five or six days, he would move on to some other place," Rainwater said.

The break came when investigators located Farris in Sandy Springs.

Rainwater said he's charged with five counts of burglary and one count of theft by taking. The five burglaries happened about three weeks ago.

While investigators were looking for Farris, Rainwater said another male suspect burglarized eight businesses in one night.

Rainwater said that man also took petty cash, but targeted shopping centers in the county. Forsyth County is working with other agencies in the case.

Rainwater said investigators believe he'll target businesses in one area, then move to another county or region.

"He chooses his counties and cities very carefully, and he'll come back after three or four weeks, when you let your guard down somewhat."

Investigators haven't developed a suspect description yet.
