FLOWERY BRANCH - A man who had barricaded himself inside of a south Hall County residence Wednesday afternoon was in custody around 4:20 p.m.

Sheriff's Deputy Chad Mann said the residence is on Winfield Drive. That road is off of Strickland Road, just off of Winder Highway.

The SWAT team had responded to the residence with public reports of a heavy law enforcement presence in the area toward the end of the 3:00 p.m. hour. At one point, Hall County Fire Services was also on standby for support.

According to Mann, the man refused to pull over for deputies during a traffic stop. Mann said authorities followed him to his residence on Winfield Drive.

"He pulled up to his residence, got into a brief struggle with deputies, produced a firearm and deputies kind of retreated. He barricaded himself inside his residence and the Hall County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team was activated," Mann said.

Mann said SWAT negotiators convinced the man to come out of the house and into a peaceful surrender. While authorities haven't yet released the man's name, Mann said he faced charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

There's no word on circumstances surrounding the original 3:22 p.m. traffic stop.
