Commissioners Tuesday approved the half-mile widening project that involves another stretch of Buford Drive/State Route 20. The work will run from Interstate 985 to South Lee Street.
According to the county, the work will extend earlier widening work on 20, that went from the Mall of Georgia to 985.
The latest project will widen the existing stretch from four to six lanes. It includes turn lanes as well as some curb, gutter and sidewalk work. South Lee Street and Satellite Boulevard are also expected to get upgrades.
"Buford Drive is a state highway, so we are once again partnering with the state DOT to get this much-needed widening accomplished," District 4 Commissioner John Heard said.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will fund 26 percent of the over $960,000 project. The remainder of the funding comes from the county's 2009 SPLOST. G.P.'s Enterprises got the nod for the work as the lowest of six bidders.
County officials said the project is expected to wrap up next Spring and be completed within existing right-of-way. The county estimates the stretch of road carries more than 58,000 vehicles per day.
