CLARKESVILLE - A fugitive seen carrying a weapon Friday was captured just after midnight in the Fairview community west of Clarkesville.

Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell confirmed at 12:10 a.m. the wanted man is in custody.

Officers from across the area searched for the man, who was wanted for a recent escape in Hall County.

Hall County Deputy Sheriff Chad Mann confirmed the man failed to return from work release recently.

Mann said his department's officers received a telephone call that Habersham County deputies were trying to serve a warrant on Joseph Dale McAllister, 38, Friday night when he ran.

"He fled on foot from them with a long knife - possibly a machete," Mann said.

Habersham and Hall County sheriff's officers, the Georgia State Patrol and its aviation unit, K9 units and local police departments saturated the Fairview/Habersham Mills area where McAllister was last seen.

Mann said the arrest at 12:08 a.m. capped off a five-hour search.

"They did find the knife," Mann said. "They found a handcuff key in his back pocket."

The arrest was made off Georgia Highway 115 in the McConnell Road area west of Habersham Mills Road.

"Once they spotted him, he surrendered without incident - no struggle," Mann said.

McAllister now is facing charges in Habersham and Hall counties.

Additional details will be forthcoming.
