UNG to screen documentary about barriers to education

OAKWOOD - The University of North Georgia (UNG) will host a screening of a documentary that explores the barriers to education faced by girls and women around the world. <br /> <br /> "Girl Rising," which will be shown Oct. 10 on the Gainesville Campus, is free and open to the public.<br /> <br /> The screening of the Academy-award winning "Girl Rising" is set for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 10 in the Martha T. Nesbitt Building, room 3110.<br /> <br /> The screening, held in conjunction with the Oct. 11 International Day of the Girl, aims to increase the awareness of the barriers to education faced by young girls and women around the world. "Girl Rising" features the stories of nine girls born into unforgiving circumstances and voice overs by Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Alicia Keys and others.<br /> <br /> "We believe in the power of education to change not only a girl, but the world," said Dr. Robert Michael, dean of UNG's College of Education. "By hosting an International Day of the Girl event at UNG, we are demonstrating our commitment to breaking down the barriers that prevent girls around the world from going to school.
