A contractor that manages highly radioactive liquid waste at the Savannah River Site near Augusta is furloughing 1,400 employees during the federal government shutdown.

Savannah River Remediation is putting the employees on furlough until further notice. About 360 employees are staying on the job.

Those temporary cuts are on top of the layoffs of 465 employees that Savannah River Remediation announced last month.

The Savannah River Site is run by the U.S. Department of Energy. The site's primary contractor, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, has posted no furlough notice on its website.
