GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Department of Transportation barricaded part of Mt. Vernon Road in North Hall County because of a natural gas line rupture Friday afternoon.

According to Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle, the four-inch gas line was accidentally cut by Gainesville Public Utilities. Cagle said Atlanta Gas Light was on the scene for repair work, which was completed just before 9pm. The roadway re-opened shortly afterward.

"This is pretty common. We've had much bigger lines than that. The barricade was just to keep traffic out of the way," Cagle said.

The location of the cut was near Aspen Hill Drive, according to Cagle. The detour was Jim Hood Road and Highland Drive.

Fire officials reported the break around 4:15 p.m. using social media.
