Gwinnett County Police release details in fatal Buford crash

BUFORD - An elderly woman died Friday afternoon in a traffic accident at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and S. Waterworks Road in Buford.

Gwinnett County Police Corporal Jake Smith said an off-duty officer had stopped traffic on Peachtree Industrial to allow a funeral procession to cross on S. Waterworks Road.

Smith said when the final vehicle in the procession had cleared the intersection, the officer released traffic on Peachtree Industrial.

A maroon SUV on S. Waterworks ignored a red light, according to Smith, and was hit in the passenger side by a white pickup truck traveling on Peachtree Industrial.

"It's still speculation that the vehicle containing the people that were hit may have been attempting to catch up to the funeral procession, but we still have not been able to prove that," Smith said.

The passenger in the SUV was killed. Smith said the driver of the SUV, an elderly man, was hurt.

"He was injured enough to be taken to the hospital. The accident investigation unit was going to send officers up there to see if he could provide a statement," Smith added.

He described injuries to the pickup driver as not serious.

Authorities have not released any names.

The accident happened shortly before 4:00 p.m.
