"This is not what we, in the House, wanted," began Collins. "We passed four different measures, completely funding the government, sent them over to the Senate... they refused to take up three of them and voted another one down."
Collins is unsure of how long the shutdown could last, but says a conclusion will never be reached if the House and Senate don't settle their differences.
"We need to continue to put forth solutions, as we already have, but we've gotta have two people in a conversation to have a negotiation and right now the Senate has refused to do that."
Collins also said there has been contact from district constituents, ranging from support to questions to concerns and complaints.
