Boys basketball: Knights pummel Monroe Area in 8-AAAA

MONROE -- The Johnson boys used a 21-6 first quarter run and then cruised to a 79-54 win over Monroe Area Tuesday night on the road.

The win was the eighth straight for the Knights Johnson (18-4, 5-0 8-AAAA) who remained atop the region standings with the win.

The Knights jumped out to the 21-6 lead after the 1st quarter and the stretched the lead to 44-19 by the half behind a 15-point first half for Drew Dunham. Johnson outscored the Hurricanes 24-16 in the third to force a shortened fourth quarter with a 68-35 lead.

Johnson was led by Montrell McKenzie with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Dunham finished with 20 points to go with five assists. Ty Cockfield scored 15 points with five assists and Carter Cagle chipped in nine points for the Knights.

Monroe Area was led by Degarrious Smith with 12 points.

Johnson is back in action in a big 8-AAAA game at home against Chestatee on Friday.
