GAINESVILLE - Icing is reported in parts of Hall County as northeast Georgians prepare for a perhaps 1/4 inch ice before the day is over.

In West Hall, the precipitation began in the form of a light mist about 8:00. But by 9:30, sleet and light freezing rain was falling and had begun to coat exposed objects such as decks and cars.

Dawsonville Highway appeared to be clear of ice for the most part, and with few exceptions it appeared motorists took their time and drove slowly. Jerry Jackson Bridge spanning the Chattahoochee River and the Dawsonville Highway Bridge at the Forsyth County line were well coated with calcium chloride to cut down on ice accumulation.

Facebook postings from Clarks Bridge Road in North Hall indicated that icing was occurring there, as well.

By 10:00, several traffic accidents had been reported in northeast Georgia, some, at least, apparently because of icy roads and/or bridges and overpasses.

Meanwhile, like the state Department of Transportation, Hall County Road Maintenance personnel are ready to hit the streets and roads to try to keep them free of ice and passable for motorists. The Hall County Sheriff's Office issued a set of tips on driving on icy roads. (See separate story.)

County spokeswoman Katie Crumley says crews have prepared spreader trucks and snow plows to deal with any problem areas. In addition, Hall County's supply of snow and ice material was fully stocked and on hand if needed. Maintenance crews will be monitoring roads and bridges as the temperature drops and precipitation continues. Those crews will remain on call until the threat of inclement weather subsides.

Anyone wishing to report trouble on the roadways should call Hall County dispatch at (770)536-8812.
