GAINESVILLE - Plans by Hall County to re-name what's left of Friendship Road "Lanier Islands Parkway" go before the county planning commission Tuesday.

If successful, that means that the South Hall road, which until just a few years ago had three names - Georgia 347, Friendship Road, Holiday Road - will have only one. It will still officially be known as Georgia Highway 347 but no longer Holiday Road or Friendship Road.

In 2010, the county commission re-named the stretch from I-985 west to Lake Lanier Islands, then known as Holiday Road, "Lanier Islands Parkway." There was no objection voiced at the meeting to the move. (See earlier story.)

Now, the county proposes doing the same with the remainder of the road, from I-985, east to its terminus at Old Winder Highway.

County spokeswoman Katie Crumley said earlier this month officials want to drive tourists to the Lake Lanier Islands resort since it's an economic engine and brings tax money to the county. She said the name change would spur more visits to Lake Lanier Islands.

Tuesday's planning commission meeting is at 5:15 at at the Hall County Government Center.
