GAINESVILLE - Other than three unfortunate vehicle owners, everyone was fine Friday morning following a car fire in a parking deck at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. That deck is used by several employees, and the fire happened during a shift change.

One vehicle caught fire in the deck off South Enota Drive behind the medical center building around 8:45 a.m.

"One primary vehicle where the fire started out, and then two adjacent vehicles there was exposure received and some damage," Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said.

Firefighters put out the blaze and fanned the smoke out of the deck. That smoke spewed out of the deck earlier, making initial entry a tough task for firefighters.

Quick acting medical center employees were able to minimize any smoke inside the actual building according to Canada.

"Their security personnel were able to close off some of their fresh air intakes very quickly to minimize the amount of smoke that may have got in the system."

And Canada said the hospital's air system is so good that it moves a high volume of air very quickly.

He said there's no damage to the deck structure, and no one was harmed by the smoke or fire.

The city fire marshal was on scene Friday morning, looking into the cause of the initial fire.
