DAHLONEGA - A Lumpkin County recreation area reopened for day-use activities Friday after being closed for more than a year due to storm damage.

Officials with the U.S. Forest Service said Boggs Creek Recreation Area, located off U.S. Highway 129 north of Turners Corner, was hit particularly hard in April of last year as a powerful band of tornadoes swept through the Chattahoochee National Forest.

During the subsequent timber salvage, clean-up and restoration activities, Boggs Creek Road and the surrounding recreation area had been closed for public safety.

Even though the area has reopened for day-use activities, officials said camping is still prohibited in the area.
