GAINESVILLE - A 25-year-old man has drowned in the Van Pugh Park North area of Lake Lanier, according to Hall County authorities.

"He was a 25-year-old male who was apparently swimming with friends, who were attempting to swim to an island, when he went under," said Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell.

Kimbrell said it appears the group of people that the victim was with thought he had made it out of the water but later realized he was missing.

He said the rescue team was able to make a quick recovery, but he said since an hour passed before they were called, no resuscitative efforts were made.

Kimbrell said the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is investigating.

An official with the DNR later identified the victim as Kyle Miller of Doraville. He said Miller's body was discovered 20 yards from the bank in about 15 feet of water just before 4:30 p.m. Monday.
