GAINESVILLE - Hall County authorities say they are now treating the death of a 16-year-old girl whose body was found in a wooded area near the shoreline of Lake Lanier as a homicide.

Hall County Sheriff's Sgt. Kiley Sargent says that is based on a preliminary report from the medical examiner's office.

Truelove was reported missing Thursday. Her body was found Friday near the Lake Lanier Club apartments in Gainesville.

Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said students were notified of Truelove's death at the beginning of the school day. She said grief counselors are on hand to console students.

"There was special attention with her first period class so that all of them knew," said Dyer.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted Hall County sheriff's officials in processing the scene.

Police are also investigating whether the teenager had a stalker, and were examining her Twitter account for leads.

Dyer said the entire student body has been shocked and saddened by Truelove's death, but she said they are waiting on any type of public memorial ceremony.

"Because of the circumstances, there is a waiting period here to decide when things are appropriate," Dyer said. "This is new territory for us, and we are being respectful of the family and the investigation."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
