Huckabee ran for president in 2008 and won the Republican primary in Georgia. Current GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney was also part of that race.
Huckabee said he believes Romney can beat Barack Obama in Georgia, since he continues to focus on the economy.
"I think he needs to remind the people of Georgia that he, first of all, is going to approach this [the presidency] with a real sense of economic sanity, which we've not had in the past four years" said Huckabee.
"People in Georgia understand that you can't spend money you don't have and you can't borrow money you can't afford to pay back. He gets that."
Huckabee also said Romney's support of traditional values should resonate with most Georgians.
As far as stumping now for a man he once opposed on the campaign trail, Huckabee said that he and Romney are now on the same team, as he put it.
"Four years ago we were opponents, but not enemies," said Huckabee.
"I've had people ask me, 'Is it hard or easy to support Mitt Romney?' and I say it's very easy. This is about our country. This isn't about any personal issues between Mitt Romney and me from four years ago."
Huckabee spoke to reporters outside the Robson Event Center in downtown Gainesville, where he was the headliner at a private fundraising party for Romney.
