FLOWERY BRANCH - A motorcyclist was airlifted to Grady Hospital following a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 985 northbound near the Athens Highway overpass Thursday afternoon.

Christopher Daniel Haynes, 27, of Gainesville was riding his 1997 Honda motorcycle when he struck the rear of a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero that had slowed for traffic. Haynes suffered a head injury, the other driver was not injured according the Georgia State Patrol Spokesman Gordy Wright.

"It was a reported piece of road debris in the roadway that caused the vehicles to come together," said Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell.

Kimbrell said witnesses say that piece of debris may have been a refrigerator in the roadway.

He said all lanes of I-985 were shut down while the helicopter landed.

He said several other minor accidents occurred in the area around that time, but no one other than the motorcyclist was injured in any of the incidents.

The accident involving the motorcycle occurred around 3 p.m.
