CLAYTON - A Rabun County animal shelter that's been at the center of a scandal in recent weeks involving its director is closing its doors.

Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter Board Member Kirk Knous told Fox 5 News that the doors to the shelter will close on Oct. 31 following a huge drop in donations.

"We're one of the best in the state... this is just so upsetting," Knous said. "We just want to save animals."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service is investigating former shelter Director Peanut Kilby for allegations that she mislead donors and ordered healthy dogs to be euthanized.

"I think the board failed in its duty to oversee the day-to-day activities of the shelter, yes. Did it fail in its mission to save animals? No," said board member Danny Benson.

The board voted unanimously to terminate Kilby's employment with the shelter last month following news of the investigations.
