Authorities warn North Ga. residents about tax scam

UNDATED - An email scam has been circulating in North Georgia in an attempt to gain residents' personal financial information.

Hall County Sheriff's Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks said the email claims to be in reference to the reader's 2010 income tax return and says an investigation has indicated that there might be some undeclared foreign income under the recipient's name.

The email goes on to ask for personal information in order to rectify the situation and threatens a number of harsh penalties if the taxpayer doesn't comply.

Wilbanks said that according to the IRS website, the agency will never contact a taxpayer by email or social media. He also said the email mentions a tax form that doesn't even apply to individual returns and strongly urges residents to be wary of the scam.
