GAINESVILLE - "The Rock" on Pearl Nix Parkway is a longtime part of Gainesville High School life and lore.

Its layers and layers of paint have shared messages of joy and sorrow, Red Elephant sports pep and championships attained for decades.

It's been said that if you have a message to get out, paint the rock. Such effective media cannot be denied; now it is spreading.

On Friday, Hanson Aggregates donated three large rocks to Centennial Arts Academy, Gainesville Exploration Academy and New Holland Core Knowledge Academy.

Shiel Construction Company assisted in hauling the rocks to each school location.

The rocks will be used as a means of communication and celebration for the schools with painted school announcements and messages.
