The Statesboro Herald reports that Sam Baker is resigning after 17 years as director of athletics at the Statesboro university.
Baker notified Georgia Southern President Brooks Keel of his decision, and Keel has asked him to remain in his position until a replacement can be identified.
Keel said that once a new athletic director is in place, Baker will transition to a new job as a special assistant to the president to assist with projects involving academics and capital construction.
Keel said there's no timeframe for the search, but officials would like to have someone in place soon, given the upcoming start of the fall sports season.
