GAINESVILLE - The Play On Players, a college project collaboration between Gainesville theatre majors Carly Berg and Haden Rider, plans to hold auditions on August 13 for young actors ages 8 to 18 who are interested in winning a performance spot at the national Junior Theatre Festival. The festival will take place in Atlanta in January 2013.

Berg and Rider, both juniors in the Gainesville Theatre Alliance professional training program at Gainesville State College (GSC) and Brenau University, have been involved in performing, choreographing, music directing or directing for the Junior Theatre Festival for several years.

The festival is sponsored by Musical Theatre International (MTI), a major musical theatre licensing agency. This year's competition team will be performing Honk, Jr., an MTI musical production based on the classic story of "The Ugly Duckling."

Gay H. Hammond, Director of WonderQuest, the Gainesville Theatre Alliance's theatre for young audiences and an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Brenau University, is consulting on the project.

Auditions will take place at 5:00, Monday, Aug. 13, at the Ed Cabell Theatre on the GSC campus in Oakwood. Audition appointments are available by emailing [email protected].

Auditioners should have some stage experience and be prepared with a short musical theatre song selection (under 1 minute, an accompaniment CD would be helpful but is not required) and come prepared to dance. Some auditioners may be asked to perform cold readings and/or sing for specific characters in the Honk, Jr. script.

The Play On Players cast will rehearse on Saturday mornings September through December in preparation for performances in mid-December. A segment of the production will be performed at the National Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta in January, 2013. The cost for cast members is $200, the bulk of which covers costs of attending the Junior Theatre Festival in January.
