According to her nephew, White County Probate Judge Garrison Baker, she was appointed interim sheriff following the death of her husband, Sheriff Frank Baker. Sarah Baker served as interim sheriff from Nov. 10, 1991, until the next election was held and current sheriff, Neal Walden, was elected. Prior to her appointment as sheriff, Sarah Baker worked beside and assisted her husband during his 31 years in office. She did administrative work, oversaw the jail, and cooked for inmates.
According to book "Mountain Lines- Wit, Wisdom and History from the North Georgia Mountains," there were at least two occasions when Sheriff Baker was out searching for a dangerous fugitive and his wife was the one to apprehend the subject. On one of the occasions, Mrs. Baker radioed her husband and asked what he was doing. When he responded that he was tracking a murderer, Sarah advised, "You just come on back, I've got him locked up."
She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and active member of Mt. Yonah Baptist Church, Cleveland.
