Alcohol limit higher for Ga. boaters than drivers

UNDATED - Safety advocates are pushing for a lower legal limit for boaters who consume alcohol on Georgia's lakes and rivers in light of this week's fatal boating accident on Lake Lanier.

Unlike most other states, the legal alcohol limit for boat drivers in Georgia is .10, even though Georgians who get behind the wheel of a car must keep their blood-alcohol content below .08.

This year, legislation to lower the limit to .08 was approved in Georgia's House but died in a Senate committee.

The renewed push for a change in the law comes on the heels of Monday night's tragic boat crash on Lake Lanier that took the life of a 9-year-old boy and his 13-year-old brother. Authorities said the man that hit the boys' boat has been charged with boating under the influence.
