Special Agent in Charge Jim Fullington confirmed his agency's involvement Wednesday.
"The Winder Police Department Chief Dennis Dorsey requested us to assist in an investigation involving a city employee who had been terminated," Fullington said.
"It involves what I refer to as the water department or utility department, someone working in the billing section."
Chief Dorsey said he turned the case over to the GBI because it involves the city, and he's a city employee.
Dorsey said he was called to city hall and asked to look into some alleged billing mistakes or indiscretions.
"I indicated that it would be best to have an outside agency come in and look at the billing practice as a whole to see if there was anything illegal done, rather than my department doing the investigation," Dorsey said.
Fullington said authorities got started this week, having just started a couple of interviews. Dorsey said Agent Liz Bigham is handling the case.
Fullington and Dorsey both said they could not confirm the former employee's name or position.
