Local legislators initially approved the maps, and Gov. Nathan Deal signed the plan earlier this spring, sending them to the federal government. The maps were created after the 2010 Census to evenly distribute population among school board districts.
The Justice Department's decision to approve the new maps now raises questions about whether the new or old voting plans should be used for primary elections this summer.
Republican Rep. Allen Peake of Macon says he supports using the new maps. But a Bibb County elections official says she doesn't know how the federal action might affect the races.
