BRUNSWICK - (AP) A bus driver and an assistant in Glynn County have been suspended from their jobs after they were accused of leaving a 5-year-old special needs student strapped into an unattended bus for nearly two hours.

Both employees could get fired after the local school board discusses the incident during a meeting Tuesday, school system spokesman Jim Weidhass said. The district has not publicly released the names of the driver and the ride-along assistant because it considers the case a pending personnel matter.

"They have not driven a bus since and they won't again for Glynn County schools," Weidhaas said.

The incident happened when the child was picked up on the morning of April 23, according to the school system. The student should have been taken to a pre-kindergarten program for children with special needs. Instead, the child was not dropped off at the school and was left strapped into a car seat on the unattended bus for nearly two hours after it arrived at a bus depot.

Another bus driver finally noticed the child when that driver came to use the vehicle.

Weidhaas said the child was not injured and has returned to school.
