Gainesville hosts Olympic canoe/kayak trials for Canada

GAINESVILLE - The Canadian Olympic trials are taking place at Gainesville's Lake Lanier Olympic Venue this weekend.

According to Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club President Kevin Seitz, event organizers canceled at Oklahoma City to come to Gainesville about 45 days ago when they found out LCKC could accommodate them.

"All the Canadian coaches like our venue better than Oklahoma's, the race course itself, so that's why they're here," he said.

Seitz said that means 75 of Canada's top athletes in the sport will be at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue on Clarks Bridge Road, competing in races on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"Basically our job hosting them involves putting in the course, making sure everything is ready for the event and then providing whatever volunteers they needed to help put on the event," he said.

The winners of this weekend's events will be one step closer to representing Canada in London this summer.
