JEFFERSON - City officials say it's not a done deal, but there is the possibility Walmart will build a new store on Highway 29/129 in Jefferson.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that a public hearing has been scheduled on Jan. 8 at the Jefferson Civic Center. Wolverton & Associates, the company that filed for rezoning of the building site, will host a question-and-answer session at 6:00 p.m.

Jefferson's planning commission won't get its first official look at the rezoning application until Jan. 18, according to the newspaper report. Their recommendation would go to the Jefferson City Council on Feb. 18 under the current schedule. Council members would not make a final vote until Feb. 25.

The proposed store would be 152,000 square feet, according to developers and would include a garden center and a quick lube facility.

The site for the proposed Walmart is on U.S. Highway 29/129 at Old Pendergrass Road.
