ATLANTA - Authorities say 17 people died in traffic crashes on Georgia roads during the Christmas holiday weekend; four of those death occurred in North Georgia.

The Georgia State Patrol reported the numbers Tuesday evening. The State Patrol based the count on a Christmas holiday period that began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Tuesday.

State troopers investigated eight of the fatalities reported, with the other six deaths being investigated by police agencies in Smyrna, College Park, Newnan, Rockdale County, Gwinnett County, and Cobb County.

Three of the deaths in North Georgia happened in the first hours of the travel period, two of them Friday night in Habersham and Barrow counties and the third early Saturday morning in Banks County. In addition, one person was killed in Gwinnett County in a traffic accident.

Last year, three people died statewide in Christmas holiday wrecks.
