Campbell has served as the county's chief financial officer for about four years.
She grew up in Dawson County and said she's humbled by the appointment.
"I'm just honored to be in this position. I'm so excited about the opportunities that are in front of me and want to give back to my hometown," Campbell said.
Campbell said she'll start January 14. She replaces Kevin Tanner, who was elected to the Georgia General Assembly.
As someone familiar with the county's finances, she said they're in good shape.
"I don't see a lot of big changes any time in the near future. As the economy recovers, then is when we would probably look at expanding programs or expanding infrastructure."
