GAINESVILLE - Santa made an early visit this year to Northeast Georgia Medical Center's (NGMC's) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

He recently spent several hours treating the hospital's smallest patients to a personal visit, a photo and their first Christmas gift. Santa has done this for several years, recognizing that many of these patients will spend the holidays in the hospital as they grow and mature.

"We're so thankful that Santa came again this year to visit with our patients and families," said Janessa Canals-Alonso, RN, unit manager of the NICU. "This is such a treat for our families, many of whom may spend Christmas here in the hospital. Taking a picture with Santa at the mall is not an option for them, so being able to have that 'First Christmas' Santa photo for their scrapbooks is extra special for them."

Northeast Georgia Medical Center has the region's only Level III NICU, which provides specialized care for babies born prematurely or with illness. For more information, visit www.nghs.com/women
