"We want people to remember what an awesome, wonderful young man Adam was," said Buford boys basketball assistant coach Mike Lawley. "He was all about being positive and helping others. And we want to celebrate his life and create a positive memory for the community and Adam's parents and brothers."
To honor Smith and his family, the Wolves will play out a "Silent Night" during Friday's game against Banks County in Buford, in which fans and students will remain quiet until the Wolves score their 10th point of the contest -- memorializing the No. 10 that Smith wore.
"At that point we'll call a couple of timeouts and everybody's going to just erupt," Lawley said. "We want that to be a huge, impactful moment."
Students will be admitted free on Friday, and Smith's parents, Mike and Jan, will be in attendance at the contest -- which is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. but may start earlier or later depending on the girls game that will be played out prior.
"Adam's parents are excited about this, and we hope it's just something we can do to honor his memory," Lawley said.
It is not the only honorarium Buford will undertake this year for Smith, who would have been a junior this season and a member of the Buford varsity squad. The Wolves will also drape a No. 10 jersey on an empty seat on the Wolves' bench for each game. And, on Jan. 26, after playing Wesleyan, Buford will donate a significant portion of that game's gate to the scholarship that has been set up in Smith's name.
Smith collapsed during a preseason training session on Sept. 13 and passed away on Sept. 16 at Northside Hospital-Forsyth.
