Forsyth County extends Local Business Initiative

CUMMING -- Forsyth County businesses that bid on county government projects will continue to hold a slight edge over their out-of-county competitors for another year.

During the first county commission meeting of December, commissioners approved a one year extension of the Local Business Initiative that gives county businesses a five percent credit preference.

The initiative was introduced by Commissioner Patrick Bell three years ago.
Bell said the purpose of the program is to return as much taxpayer money as possible to the local economy.

Bell, who will leave office this month, said the initiative is one of his proudest accomplishments.

"I've tried very hard the last four years to be a friend to local business. I'm extremely proud of this initiative and the fact that my fellow commissioners have recognized its importance by extending it for another year."

The credit applies only to projects with a total cost of less than $500,000 and applicants must demonstrate they qualify each time they submit a bid.

Procurement Director Donna Kukarola said, "Forsyth County purchases a wide variety of materials, equipment and servces so there are opportunities for all types of companies to do business with the county government."
