GSC Debate Team brings home dozen awards from national tournament

GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville State College (GSC) Debate Team won 12 awards at the Study Break Debate Tournament at Webster University in St. Louis recently.

The awards included 2nd Place Sweepstakes (overall), 2nd Place Junior Varsity Debate for Fernando Gonzalez (Flowery Branch) and Consepcion Rodriguez (Gainesville), 3rd Place and undefeated in novice debate Kiran Singh (Cumming) and Destin Murphy (Ball Ground), 5th Place JV Team of Leroy Hoang (Dawsonville) and Tim Brown (Gainesville), and 7th Place Novice Team of Andre Gonzales (Jefferson) and Maria Palacios (Gainesville).

Additionally, GSC won the following individual speaker awards: 3rd JV Speaker Tim Brown, 7th JV Speaker Fernando Gonzalez, 7th Novice Speaker Andre Gonzales, 12th Novice Speaker Destin Murphy, and 15th Novice Speaker Kiran Singh.

Murphy and Singh amassed a 4-0 record at the tournament.

Team advisor Tom Preston was presented with a special award as a founder of the Study Break Tournament 25 years ago while at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
