GAINESVILLE -- Johnson built a big first half lead and then held on to beat Chestatee 96-83 Friday night in boys basketball action.

The Knights (7-0) jumped out to a 25-15 lead after the first quarter and extended their lead to 50-30 by halftime. Chestatee, however, would get back in the game in the second half behind solid shotting.

The War Eagles drained eight of their 12 3-pointers after halftime. They outscored Johnson 28-24 in the third quarter, and would eventually cut the lead to 11 midway through the fourth quarter.

But Johnson answered each Chestatee run to hold on down the stretch.

Johnson was led by Ty Cockfield with 31 points and seven rebounds. Montrell McKenzie had 19 points and 10 rebounds while James Hodges and Carter Cagle each added 13 points for the Knights. Roderick English had 11 points and Drew Dunham fell one point shy of a triple-double, with 9 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds for Johnson.

Chestatee was led by Keelan Passmore with 18 points and Jordan Stubblefield with 16.

Johnson next will take on arch-rival West Hall Saturday on the road. Chestatee will play host to Forsyth Central on Saturday.
