CUMMING - Two new parking decks for downtown Cumming were approved at this week's meeting of the Forsyth County Jail/Courthouse Project Team.

According to a posting on the county website, the group was presented with three options by Doug Shaw of Wakefield Beasley and Associates. Option C is the one that the committee approved by a vote of 8-0 (Sheriff Ted Paxton, a member of group, was not present.)

It calls for building a three-story, 450-space deck behind the county administration building in downtown Cumming and a one-story, 250-space facility on a city-owned lot next to Tyson's.

Option A called for a five-story, 700-space parking deck behind the administration building and Opton B, a four-story, 700-space facility on the lot next to Tyson's.

The task force was presented with a Facility Condition Assessment on the existing jail which determined it should not be renovated. The group voted, again 8-0, to move toward demolition of the current jail.

The county will work with the city in identifying some temporary parking areas while the existing downtown parking deck is torn down as part of the courthouse/jail construction project.

The jail/courthouse project team has been meeting regularly for several months, ironing out plans for the construction of a new jail and courthouse in Cumming.
