BUFORD - A man is dead following an altercation with officers at a Buford apartment complex Tuesday night.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith said in a written statement that officers responded to the apartment building on North Alexander Street around 9:30 p.m. to investigate reported drug activity.

When the officers approached a group of men in the parking lot, who had been seen smoking marijuana, one man pulled a gun and held it to his own head.

Smith said one officer attempted to subdue the man with a taser, but the man removed the prongs of the taser and then pointed the gun at the officers. That's when the officers fired at the man and killed him.

Smith said all three officers have been placed on routine administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.

Police identified the dead man as Jose Antonio Hernandez-Gonzalez, 20, of Buford.
