ATLANTA - Authorities said personal information belonging to about 900 former hospital patients has been stolen, and was copied by a former hospital contract worker.

Officials Friday said authorities investigated a breach of personal records belonging to patients who visited Grady Health Systems' emergency care facilities.

Denise Simpson, a spokeswoman for the hospital system, said the contractor worked for Advanced Data Processing Inc., a company that handles the hospital's billing system.

An internal investigation by Advanced Data Processing revealed an employee stole personal information of thousands of ambulance service patients nationwide between January and October.

Simpson said the employee has been identified and terminated.

Officials are contacting people whose information may have been compromised. The contracting company is offering former patients a year of free credit monitoring.
