Peterson had served as assistant warden at the Gainesville facility since its activation in 2009. Assuming the position of warden, Peterson will oversee the operation of the 500-bed facility and lead a staff of more than 160 employees. He will replace Stacey Stone, who has been named warden at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin. (See earlier story.)
"We have a great team here at North Georgia Detention," said Peterson. "I look forward to a very positive and successful future here as warden."
Seventeen years ago Peterson began his career with CCA as a correctional officer at the Metro-Davidson County Detention Facility in Nashville, Tenn. Over the years, Peterson has served in various managerial roles throughout the company, including the role of assistant warden at the Torrance County Detention Facility in New Mexico, and serving as a member and divisional coordinator of the Special Operation Response Team (SORT).
Asked what his approach has been throughout his tenure at CCA, Peterson acknowledged it can be challenging, but said he approaches each day as a new opportunity to do better.
"My outlook throughout my career has been to treat everyone, regardless of who they are or position they hold, with respect and dignity," said Peterson. "My management model has been to emphasize teamwork, respect, accountability and professionalism."
Outside of his new role as warden, Peterson enjoys playing basketball, getting out on the golf course and watching University of Alabama football. Peterson, along with his wife Gladys and two daughters, live in Gainesville.
