Girls basketball: Lady Falcons open season with region win

FLOWERY BRANCH -- Tavia Sykes had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Flowery Branch girls to a 63-52 win over Salem in their season and Region 8-AAAAA opener Tuesday night.

The Lady Falcons (1-0, 1-0 in region) grabbed the early lead with a 15-10 first quarter and then held off the Lady Seminoles for the win. Flowery Branch led just 44-37 heading into the fourth quarter but pulled away down the stretch.

Marissa Ivey had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Heather Moore and Jacy Ramey had 10 points each for the Lady Falcons.

Flowery Branch will travel to Loganville on Friday in another Region 8-AAAAA contest.
